Castellabate

ENGLISH:

Castellabate is an ancient medieval village which is located in the province of Salerno, in Campania (South Italy). It is located on a hill and it is surrounded by the Castle of the Abbot. It was founded by the abbot Costabile Gentilcore, who is its patron, in 1223. As soon as you arrive in Castellabate you’ll be surprised and fascinated by the Belvedere San Costabile: a big terrace from which you can admire the cristal-clear sea, its beaches, the red roofs of the houses and the streets of the different villages. Before entering the Old town of this magnificent village, you’ll notice a plaque dating back to 1811 and dedicated to Gioacchino Murat, on which it is written: “QUI NON SI MUORE” (which means “HERE YOU DON’T DIE”, and which refers to the purity of the air).

The Old town of Castellabate is full of streets, arches and stairways, all in the medieval style. Some buildings and significant places that should be visited are: the Chapel of the Rosario, The Castle of the Abate (Abbot), the Basilica of Santa Maria de Giulia, the port and the square of Castellabate and its elegant medieval palaces.

Maybe not everyone knows that the village of Castellabate is know because it is where it was made the Italian movie “Benvenuti al Sud” (“Welcome to the South”), with two famous actors: Claudio Bisio e Alessandro Siani.

ITALIANO:
