The Library of Celsus

La biblioteca di Celso si trova a Efeso, in Turchia. Venne costruita tra il 114 e il 117 d.C. in onore di Tiberio Giulio Celso Polemeano e ne costituì anche la sua tomba. Venne distrutta da un incendio dovuto al terremoto del 262 d.C., fu poi ricostruita e utilizzata fino al IV secolo; poi però un altro terremoto la distrusse completamente. Nelle nicchie laterali erano contenuti circa 12.000 rotoli di papiro, mentre le 4 sulla facciata ospitavano le statue che raffiguravano le 4 doti di Celso: saggezza, virtù, benevolenza e conoscenza. La tecnica edilizia utilizzata è l’opera laterizia, con l’uso di pietrame. La facciata è decorata con marmi pregiati e costituisce un esempio di “barocco asiatico”.

The library of Celsus is located in Ephesus, in Turkey. It was built between 114 and 117 A.D. in honour of Tiberio Giulio Celso Polemeano and it was also there place where he was buried. It was destroyed by a fire due to the earthquake of 262 A.D., then it was rebuilt and used until the IV century; after, another earthquake it was completely destroyed. In the lateral niches were contained 12.000 rolls of papyrus, where as the four on the facade hosted the statues that respresented the 4 talents of Celso: wisdom, virtue, benevolence and knowledge. The building technique that was used is the brick work, with the use of stones. The facade is decorated with precious marbles and it constitutes an example of “Asian baroque”.
